The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

by M. Polier

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL/TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

U.S. Release Date: May 4, 2012

Genre/Rating/Runningtime: Dramedy/PG-13/124 mins

DIRECTOR: JOHN MADDEN

STARRING:  JUDI DENCH, MAGGIE SMITH, TOM WILKENSON, DEV PATEL

PROS

  • Expertly crafted story that takes you on a multifaceted magic carpet ride.
  • Story and characters twist and turn in most surprising and delightful ways (not to spoil any of it.)
  • It is India in living color.  Glorious.  Uplifting.  Fearless cinematic storytelling show fearful characters, every one of them, overcoming and besting themselves.

CONS

  • I hate to have to say it…but the truth is the two Indian leads (we fell head over heels for Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire) are forced in this film that wildly succeeds anyway.  Maybe it’s cultural, but their naïve energy and  their inability to stand firm against their elders seems unreal next to the earnestness of the English elderly struggling for their lives.

FINAL VERDICT: One of those films destined to become a classic.  Reminds me of Merchant and Ivory at their peak.  Don’t miss it.  One of the year’s best so far.  Highly recommended.

QUICK QUOTE!

Sonny: Everything will be all right in the end… if it’s not all right then it’s not the end.                                                                                                                                     Evelyn: Yes
[It is builder’s tea]
Evelyn: , we dunk biscuits into it.
Sunaina’s Brother: Dunk?
Evelyn: Means lowering the biscuit into the tea and letting it soak in there and trying to calculate the exact moment before the biscuit dissolves, when you whip it up into your mouth and enjoy the blissful union of biscuits and tea combined. It’s more relaxing than it sounds.

Cousin Marisa said: “I knew it would be that good!”

Complementary Food: Indian dishes of all kinds…followed by tea and biscuits(but of course I mean cookies!)

The Avengers

by M. Polier

THE AVENGERS/MARVEL STUDIOS

U.S. Release Date: May 4, 2012

Genre/Rating/Runningtime:Action Adventure/PG-13/143mins.

DIRECTOR: JOSS WHEDON

STARRING: ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.,CHRIS EVANS, MARK RUFFALO, CHRIS HENSWORTH, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, JEREMY RENNER, SAMUEL L. JACKSON and more…

PROS

  • Action packed from beginning to end.
  • Nice tag sets up yet another sequel.
  • Lots of great cameos for the film nerds:. Powers Boothe and Jenny Agutter (Do you remember “Walkabout”?) appear as members of the World Security Council. Avengers co-creator Stan Lee appears in a news report. Harry Dean Stanton (Do you remember him from “Private Benjamin”? His career goes back to the 1950’s) cameos as a security guard, and Polish film director Jerzy Skolimowski appears as Romanoff’s interrogator.

CONS

  • Very little story there, and what is up on the screen is devoid of soul.  We left feeling like we had been caught under a big wave and couldn’t catch our breath for 2 hours.  Steve and I fell asleep midway.  Marla and Dave were with it all the way.
  • It is too long and too repetitive.
  • Not in the same class as “The Watchmen”, “Green Hornet” or even “Spider Man”.  Very un-classic.

They’ve turned Pepper Potts into Ellie May Clampett – barefoot and jean short- shorts.  The only thing missing was the rope belt.  Where was Pepper’s spice?

FINAL VERDICT: Lots of fathers and sons (under 13) in the audience…otherwise not recommended.

QUICK QUOTE!

Tony Stark: You’re missing the point! There’s no throne, there is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes and maybe it’s too much for us but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we’ll avenge it!

Dave said: “Just what you expect.  A big nothing.”

Complementary Food: Chamapgne with Noodles Romanoff or Hungarian Goulash maybe…

WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW!?/ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

DIRECTOR: WILLIAM ARNTZ, BETSY CHASSE, MARK VICENTE

STARRING: ·  MARLEE MATLIN, ELAINE HENDRIX, BARRY NEWMAN

PROS

  • Applies the laws of physics to thoughts, emotions, our lives and relationships.
  • The leading minds in science and metaphysics tell us in certain terms how uncertain everything we know, see, feel and touch is – and how to harness that uncertainty to create love and unlimited possibilities for ourselves in this life.
  • Could have lasting take-home value!  I can’t wait to further investigate the work of many of the featured experts.

CONS

  • Esoteric.  Not for the terminally logical.
  • Provocative.
  • Way out there.

FINAL VERDICT:  Makes for provocative discussion.  I want to see it again.  Good for expanding consciousness and for kick starting you into a gear from which you will begin to think out of the box in terms of possibilities for your life and relationships.  Recommended.

Fred Alan Wolf: “What I thought was unreal, now for me… seems in some ways to be more real than what I think to be real… which seems now more to be unreal.”

Ramtha:  “How can any carbon unit on Earth, in the backwaters of the Milky Way – indeed, the boondocks – possibly betray God Almighty? That is impossible. The height of arrogance is the height of control of those who would recreate God in their own image.”

DAVE SAID, “Did that actually play in the theaters?  It was so esoteric.  I wonder who funded something like that?”

Complementary Food: Wedding cake and or any food you are addicted to!

The Three Stooges

by M. Polier

THE THREE STOOGES/20TH CENTURY FOX

U.S. Release Date: April 13, 2012

DIRECTOR: THE FARELLY BROTHERS

STARRING: CHRIS DIAMANTOPOULOS, SEAN HAYES, WILL SASSO, and LARRY DAVID, JANE LYNCH, JENNIFER HUDSON

PROS

  • Executed in three short parts, starting with the delivery of the 3 babies to the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage, this is a GREAT remake and very FUNNY.  The clever dialogue is wonderful.  Lots of puns.
  •  The shtick, the sound effects, the music, the casting, is all brought together by a great  script with good messages.
  • Timing is everything, and they got it down.  How did they do it?  I’d love to see outtakes and rehearsals…I can imagine how funny Curly looked practicing his snaps….just great.

CONS

  • If you are not a fan of slapstick…shut up and go see this movie anyway…especially if you like to laugh.  A big surprise.

FINAL VERDICT:  The Farrelly Brothers are back !  Fun and funny, the story has heart and a moral message, a must not miss for any age.  Better than the original…Young and old will love it.  Don’t miss the warning message at the end of the movie…

The Hunger Games

by M. Polier

THE HUNGER GAMES/LIONS GATE ENTERTAINMENT

U.S.Release Date: March 23, 2012

DIRECTOR: GARY ROSS

STARRING: JENNIFER LAWRENCE, JOSH HUTCHERSON, LIAM HEMSWORTH, WOODY HARRELSONSTANLEY TUCCI

PROS

  • Crafted and executed flawlessly, with consummate performances; direction of action is made intimate using close close-ups; a very interesting choice since the action doubles as a reality show.
  • The story is really the star: the  proletariat, the ruling elite, the athletes, the weak, the strong, the entertainment class and the herd mentality of the youth – these groups come together in one great clash – and we are asked to view with our minds as well as our hearts.
  • The special effects are fantastic and seamless.

CONS

  • Hunger Games is about 24 kids in a fight to the death, so beware.
  • Fans of the book may not like the choices made, although the author was one of the screenwriters.  The film is two and a half hours long.
  • Is anyone tired of dreary post-apocalyptic future scenarios?  The story itself may be a turnoff to some.

FINAL VERDICT:  I loved it!  I immediately ordered all 3 books to my Kindle after the movie.  You might be able to tell I have not read the book, but I loved the movie.  Futuristic sci fi action drama that the whole family can enjoy and discuss. Violence.  Social injustice.  Victory of spirit.  Moral hearts prevail.  Sequel pending.

QUICK QUOTE!

Gale Hawthorne: “You root for your favorites, you cry when they get killed. It’s sick!”
Katniss Everdeen: “Yeah.”
Gale Hawthorne: “If no one watches, then they don’t have a game. It’s as simple as that.”

DAVE SAID, “That was entertaining, but it was no Avatar.”

  • Channing Tatum surprises by showing he can handle comedy and Jonah Hill brings his understated signature style.  They are so appealing and very funny.
  • Great surprise cameos – we won’t give them away.

CONS
